Cub Scout Fire Department Visit

Last Monday evening Donovan's Tiger Cub den visited a local fire station for an informational tour. The two firefighters started out with speaking to the group about basic fire prevention and other issues such as what to do if there is a fire. Then they took the group on a tour around a fire truck explaining the various parts and equipment. Each of the boys got a chance to sit in the back seats of the cab. Donovan later told me one of the other boys pushed him to get ahead in line.

After the tour of the truck, one suited up so the kids would know what to expect if trapped in a house and a firefighter enters for a search. The firefighter will likely be crawling and not look much like a person other than in basic shape. Here the other firefighter is illustrating to the boys that they need to go up to this "monster" and shake him or jump on him or whatever to be sure you are found.

In this photo the firefighter had just touched Donovan's shoe, and Donovan has a look of glee on his face. Again, this is all to make the kids comfortable with what a firefighter looks like and with what he or she will likely do when searching for someone. "Do not hide!" was strongly emphasized.

An action shot of one of them going down the pole for the kids. It was a great tour and I think the adults enjoyed it too! Firefighters don't have an easy job and are definitely deserving of our respect. They talked about a study that showed firefighters likely lose years off their life from the stress of having to respond in the middle of the night. I can understand that - they can go from a deep sleep to working on a fire in under five minutes!
